Kronologia

Oppi ilmiöiden/tapahtumien ajallisesta järjestyksestä, myös itse järjestys ja sitä kuvaava esitys. Kronologia on arkeologian ja historian välttämätön apuneuvo, jonka edellytyksenä on ajoittaminen. Kronologiassa arkeologinen aineisto jaetaan aikaluokkiin, jotka ovat periodeja eli (ajan)jaksoja. Pohjoisen ja itäisen Fennoskandian arkeologiassa ja historiassa periodeista on käytetty ja käytetään alla mainittuja nimityksiä. Periodien aikarajat perustuvat radiohiiliajoituksiin, jotka on kalibroitu aurinkovuosia vastaaviksi. Usein periodien tunnusmerkit ilmaantuvat eriaikaisesti itäisen ja pohjoisen Fennoskandian eri osiin. Kauttaviivan erottamat vuosiluvut osoittavat kokonaisvaihtelun aikarajat. Lisäksi periodien aikarajoja tarkoittavissa vuosiluvuissa havaitaan vähäistä päällekkäisyyttä. Koska ajoitukset ovat osaksi epätarkkoja ja määritelmät ovat osaksi epävarmoja, ensyklopedia on omaksunut tämän ratkaisun.

Paleolitikum, varhaiskivikausi (...9500 eKr)

Mesolitikum, keskikivikausi, vanhempi kivikausi (9500/6500...5300/4000 eKr).

Neolitikum, nuorempi kivikausi, nuorkivikausi (5300/4000...1800 eKr).

Vanhempi metallikausi (1900 eKr...300 jKr).

Pronssikausi, epineolitikum (1900...650 eKr).

Rautakausi (700 eKr...1350 jKr).

Chronology

The science of arranging events and phenomena in time. It is also used of the actual order itself and of its representation. Chronology is an indispensable tool for archaeology and for history, but it presupposes dating. In a chronology, the archaeological material is divided into chronological classes called periods. The names of the periods given below have been, and still are, used in the archaeology and history of northern and eastern Fennoscandia. The chronological limits of the periods are based on radiocarbon datings calibrated to calendar years. Frequently the characteristics of the periods appear at different times in different parts of northern and eastern Fennoscandia. The dates divided by slashes indicate the limits of the total fluctuation. There is also a certain amount of overlap in the dates of the periods. This encyclopaedia has adopted this procedure because the datings are to some extent inexact and the definitions partly uncertain. See also:
