Reindeer were not milked in the earliest phase of reindeer husbandry. Milking was probably introduced as a result of the example of the cattle raising Scandinavians. This is also indicated by the dairy terminology of the Saami (e.g. mielki milk is a Scandinavian loan word, cf. Norwegian melk, mjølk). The word náhppi a ladle for milking reindeer (made from the gnarl of a tree) is also of Scandinavian origin. There are corresponding forms in all the Saami languages, e.g. South Saami naehpie, Inari Saami näppi, Skolt näŽpp; cf. Old Norwegian hnappr and Swedish dialect napp bowl, goblet . The source of the Proto-Saami word could be the Proto-Scandinavian accusative singular form *hnappa. The Finnish words nappo, na(a)ppa wooden ladel are from the same Scandinavian source. It is also possible that the Finnish and Saami words have influenced each other.
