Willow grouse were hunted in the frosty weather of late winter. Traps were preferred to guns, because the willow grouse that was exported to Norway and on to Britain had to be clean, with the head neatly tucked under the wing. A shot willow grouse was covered in blood and fetched only half the price. Traps were laid in the birds feeding places. Long curving fences of brushwood were erected. In the fences there were opening with string nooses in which the birds got caught.
