The centre is a successor of the Saami Folk High School (Sámij Álmmukallaskåvllå), which was founded by the Swedish Missionary Society, the Swedish Church and the Saami people. It began its activities in the school year of 1942/43. Up until the school year of 1968/69 the school only accepted native Saami students. For a long time, activities focused on traditional folk high school courses and handicrafts. Later, courses in ecology, reindeer husbandry, Saami culture and Saami languages were added. The sponsor of the Centre is a foundation which included the Svenska Samernas Riksförbund (The Confederation of Swedish Saami) Same Ätnam (The National Saami Cultural Organisation) and the Municipality of Jokkmokk. Teaching in Lule Saami in Sweden has been organised mainly at the folk high school. Today there are continuous courses at the Saami Centre for Education.</p> [[Lule saami language: Education and daycare|Lule Saami: education and child welfare]] Otsikko 102
