It means both broad swamp and open sea in all except Skolt Saami, where it has only the latter meaning.

The word is thought to be a Scandinavian loan word (cf. Old Norwegian haf sea, open sea outside a fjord, Modern Norwegian and Swedish hav sea), although this borrowing has been disputed. The Saami word has also been borrowed by northern Finnish dialects: aapa means both a broad expanse of treeless swampland and a wide reach of open water. The Finnish word aapa has been adopted into international terminology to refer to a northern minerotrophic formation.

Some scholars think that the two different meanings of the Saami word are a result of the fact that in the sense of open sea it is a borrowing from Scandinavian languages and in the sense of swamp it is a Finnish loan word.
Àhpi, open treeless swamp 0 Otsikko 102 102
