Oravanpyynti

Squired hunting

Squirrels were traditionally hunted in low fell woodland. They were killed by striking them with sticks. Later this method was completely replaced by shooting them. The squirrel was tracked by following the pieces of bark it had caused to fall into the snow and also with dogs. Squirrel furs were a basic item of the ancient barter economy until they were supplanted by fox furs in the seventeenth century.
