<P align="justify">The word <i> … <P align="justify">The word <i>guovssat</i> Siberian jay, <i>Perisoreus infaustus</i> has corresponding forms in all the Saami languages (e.g. South Saami <i>goeksege</i> or <i>goeksh</i>, Inari Saami <i>juávaská</i>). It has been compared with similar names for birds in Mari and even in the Samoyedic languages, but the most likely cognates are the Finnish dialectal words <i>kuu(k)sanka</i> and <i>kuukso</i>, which are used of the same bird. Forms corresponding to the latter word are also found in Karelian and Ludic. It is a possible (and, in the light of sound relations, the most likely) explanation that the Finnish, Karelian and Ludic words are borrowings from Saami.</p><P align="justify"> The name for this bird takes a variety of forms in Finnish dialects and old dictionaries (e.g. <i>kuuhanka, kuuskilainen, kuukkainen</i>) in addition to the standard <i>kuukkeli</i>. The relationship of these to one another has not been elucidated, but the variation is probably due to the fact that like many names forbirds this too is mostly likely of onomatopoeic origin.</p><P align="justify"> It may be that the phonetic similarity of the word <i>guovssat</i> with <i>[[Ptarmigan|rievssat]]</i> willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus) and on the other hand, with <i>guovssu</i> twilight (<i>[[Northern lights|guovssahasat]]</i>) is significant with regard to its origins. The bird names are related by the same derivational suffix, and the words guovssat and guovssu have the same stem. The reason for the bird s name may be its reddish colouring. Another possibility is that both the bird s name and the word for twilight are descended from a root (discussed in connection with <i>[[Northern lights|guovssahasat]]</i>) <i>*kak- (*kakk-, *kaks-)</i> of onomatopoeic origin.
