They were collected from soft sandy heaths in long filaments. They were beaten until they were soft and the fibres came apart in threads. These were then boiled in lye or left to soak in a lake until they became pliable and soft. In the nineteenth century, hemp cord began to be used, and at the end of that century industrially manufactured cotton nets were adopted.
