They were beaten until they were soft and the fibres came apart in threads. These were then boiled in lye or left to soak in a lake until they became pliable and soft. In the nineteenth century, hemp cord began to be used, and at the end of that century industrially manufactured cotton nets were adopted. These have since been replaced by manufactured monofilament nets.</P><BR><BR>
