TekstiThis property is a special property in this wiki.
The Saami shaman
The Saami shaman drum is handicraft that has been made both as decoration and for usage. The making of a meavrresgárri is a process, which has a strong spiritual meaning for the Saami people of today and yesterday. The drum formed a link to the old animalistic religion that the Saami practised before they were Christianized. The life of the people and their world-view are depicted on the magic drum. A drum can be made out of a birch burl, pine burl or by bending layers of birch. These so-called frame-drums are bigger than the bowl-drums made from burls. The sound of a drum made of a pine burl is more impressive.

Veažir / the hammer and árpa / the pointer belong to the drum. The root of the antler forms the raw material for the veažir and also shapes it. The drum is beaten with the veažir and the árpa shows the way. The pictures that are carved on the bottom of the drum are decorative and at the same time hold symbolic meaning. Wet tanned reindeer hide is laid over the frame/bowl and fastened to it. This improves the sound of the drum. The pictures were drawn differently, depending on which area the drum maker came from.
* Duodji: tools, materials etc. * Goavddis thumb|600px|Drums by languages thumb|600px|Drums [[Tiedosto:08meavrresgarri.jpg|thumb|600px|Meavrresgárri
A shaman drum, made by Per Isak Juuso, Nearva (Närvä), Gárasavvon district.
