The Society for the Promotion of Saami Culture was founded in the Department of Anatomy of Helsinki University on 27 November 1932. It became an official association in 1933. Its purpose is to promote and improve the intellectual and material culture of the Saami, to publish, to arrange courses and research and to disseminate information about the Saami. In 1934, the Society began to publish the periodical Sápmelaš It also published dozens of other Saami written works, the first of which was Tuomi Itkonen's North Saami ABC Samikiel abbis, which was illustrated by Samuli Paulaharju. Publication remained the association s main activity up till the 1990s.

The first task of the society was to create a better orthography for North Saami. Paavo Ravila's reformed spelling began to be used in Finland, and from 1934 and 1950 it was used in Sápmelaš and the other publications of the society. The new system attempted to get away from the academic obsolescence of earlier orthographies and closer to the spoken language. It became known as the orthography of the Saami Society for the Promotion of Saami Culture. On the other hand, in Norway and Sweden Knut Bergsland and Israel Ruong had developed their own orthography in 1947, and it came into force in 1951. These two competing writing systems for North Saami coexisted until 1978, when a common Nordic orthography was adopted. This gave a boost to development of the Saami language and Saami literature, and teaching in the North Saami language finally got properly under way. The founders of the Society for the Promotion of Saami Culture and its most active members were Finnish academics: Prof. V. Lassila (1932-1939), Prof. J. Keränen, Prof. P. Ravila (1933-1936) and Dr. P. Mustakallio (1936). Prof. Ravila (1932-33), Dr. Erkki Itkonen (1933-1938) and K. Nickul (1938) were secretaries of the Society. Together with other Saami organizations (Samii Litto 1945, Same-Ätnam 1945, Ruoŧa Sámiid Riikkasearvi (RSR/SSR) 1950, Norgga Boazosámiid Riikkasearvi (NBR 1948) and Norgga Sámiid Riikkasearvi (NSR 1968), the Society for the Promotion of Saami Culture worked to promote cooperation between the Saami of the different Nordic countries. The initiative for a pan-Nordic Saami Conference was made in discussions held in Stockholm in early 1952. A small working group was nominated at the Stockholm to prepare the conference, which was held in Jokkmokk in Sweden from 31 August to 3 September 1953. In the first conference a joint committee was appointed, on which Finland was represented by three members of the Society for the Promotion of Saami Culture: Erkki Itkonen, J. E. Jomppanen and K. Nickul. Nickul was subsequently the Chairman of the Nordic Saami Council, founded in 1956, for more than ten years, andhe was Secretary of the Saami Council until 1972.
of the Saami Council until 1972.
 +
