Traps were preferred to guns, because the willow grouse that was exported to Norway and on to Britain had to be clean, with the head neatly tucked under the wing. A shot willow grouse was covered in blood and fetched only half the price. Traps were laid in the birds feeding places. Long curving fences of brushwood were erected.
