<P align="justify"> Also known as th … <P align="justify"> Also known as the Old Stone Age, it is the earliest period of the [[Prehistoric Age|Prehistoric Age]] and of the Stone Age. It began over a million years ago and ended c. 9500 B.C. During it hominid species (e.g. Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis) emerged and became extinct, eventually to be supplanted by modern humans (Homo sapiens). The human race was born 150,000 years ago in Africa, and about 40,000 years ago it arrived in Europe, where its presence probably advanced the extinction of Neanderthal man. In Fennoscandia repeated ice ages have removed any traces of the possible presence of hominids during the warmer interglacial stages (a cave find in western Finland provides an exception., in Fennoscandia the unbroken continuum of human settlement ending with modern man did not begin until the Late Palaeolithic Age following the peak of the Ice Age, when the continental ice sheet began to melt and its southern edge withdrew towards the north. In the north, communities that lived by hunting wild reindeer reached the level of modern Denmark about 13,000 B.C. In northern and eastern [[Fennoscandia|Fennoscandia]], no traces of human presence during the Palaeolithic have been found.</P> <BR><BR>[[Chronology|Chronology]].<BR><BR>
